Campaign Tips for Students Seeking Elected Office

Study Your College

In order to know what you can contribute to your college, you need to know your college. Find out what the pressing issues and concerns are for the students. Focus on gathering the information and be thoughtful and mature in how you approach the issues impacting Loyalist.

Get a Campaign Team Together

  • Develop a team of highly-committed individuals who will campaign with you and promote your platform to other students. Your team will be visible supporters throughout your campaign and they will help spread your message around campus.

  • Create a Facebook group – make your team members administrators so that they can each invite their entire friend list.

  • Design team shirts and have some fun!

Be Visible

  • Make sure that your posters/flyers are visible and stand out to generate a buzz.

  • Get involved in campus events and activities.

  • Work on your smile. Genuinely be nice to everyone you come in contact with.

  • Encourage and compliment people.

  • Hang out in common areas in between classes (Dining Hall, Shark Tank Pub, Link Lounge, etc.).

  • Don’t be afraid to approach students and introduce yourself. Be friendly and polite, but keep your conversation brief if students do not seem very interested.

Establish Goals for You & the Position

  • Think about why you are interested in Student Government. Why do you want to serve as a Student Government Leader.

  • Think about how you will help the College and how a Student Government position will help you. Start putting a specific agenda together. What will you do in that position? Stand for specific ideas and offer tangible things.

  • Write down your goals, consider them and then commit to them.
